Binding Compatibility |
|
NNN |
A raised bar on each side of the center of the binding; boots must have two recessed grooves. |
|
NIS |
Clicks into the pre-mounted plate being offered with some skis. NNN compatible. |
|
SNS |
Raised area in the center of the binding; boots must have their sole center recessed. |
|
SNS Pilot |
Two pins that will both lock into the binding; adds support and increases power transfer for racers and skate skiers. |
|
SNS Profil |
One toe pin that locks into the binding; SNS Profil compatible. |
 |
|
Backcountry/Touring specific bindings are wider for added support and therefore require matching with boots with wider soles and pins to accomodate this width and wider skis designed for off-track skiing. Available for NNN or SNS. |
 |
3-pin |
Requires a duckbilled boot for the binding pins to "bite" into and a wider platform ski. |
Edges |
| Metal |
Offers better control on downhills and where turns may be an option. |
| No Metal |
Lighter and better gliding than skis with metal edges. |
Base
|
| Waxable |
No grip pattern on the bases. Kick wax is necessary for forward motion.* |
| Waxless |
Bases have fishscales or a grip pattern cut into the bases for "kick".* |
*Both base types will require glide wax from time to time. Also may require climbing or kicker skins for steeper climbs.

What's the difference between Nordic Touring skis and Alpine Touring/Backcountry Telemarking skis? Nordic touring skis are usually narrower than Telemark/AT skis for more efficient gliding while touring, but with sidecut to enable turns when the opportunity arises (this differs from model to model). They're not designed for powerful, aggressive downhill skiing. These skis are also lighter in weight and softer flexing than most Tele/AT skis to again make touring more efficient; the drawback is less stability on fast/aggressive descents, especially in less than soft snow conditions. Thus, we will not usually recommend skiing a Nordic Touring setup on a groomed ski resort.
|
What's the difference between Nordic Touring skis and Classic skis? Nordic Touring skis are designed wider than Classic skis to help with floation in soft and ungroomed snow. Thus, they will be less efficient in groomed tracks, but they will float better off-track.
